I've been using the Beta of Office 2007 for about a month now. There are some things about it I really like. I even like The Ribbon. Like many, I wish the icons were smaller. Autohide is a good compromise, by why not make them less gigantic and more toolbary?
The look and feel of the new office is a blessing. But ... but ... BUT .... they still have this one... majorly annoying ... issue:
In Word, the comments can't be individually minimized, nor can they be highlighted by recency.
We generally have about 10 people interacting with our documents. We end up with entire discussions in the comments ... but Word likes comments that are at the top of the page. As you get lower and start to run out of room it gives you a (...) and wants you to read it out of the document.
Out of the document in 2007 is in a sidebar. MUCH better than the previous comments at the bottom.
But why can't I just minimize or roll-up comments as they sit on the side of the document? That would be easy to code and a much more elegant solution.
I'd also like shading to change by recency. When you end up with hundreds of comments in a doc, it's hard to find ones that have new content. But the comments are vital to preserve as they encapsulate mission-critical decision making.
I have a massive monitor, so I can stand losing screen real estate to the bar (that I can minimize myself), but every day I am battered by these comments and I can't wait until Office 2011 comes out to see if they do it that time.
