I stumbled across this Flickr photo a while back of another Chinese menu offering Wikipedia. Judging from the first two Chinese characters, it appears that the same fungus is involved.

Is there some Chinese dictionary out there that actually translates 鸡枞 as Wikipedia, I wonder? Now I'm really curious...

I was just in Beijing about 2 months ago. For one, I have no idea how they are going to host the Olympics with how horrid the pollution is.

I had the opportunity to be taken out to dinner by a local to her favorite restaurant. I knew it was authentic when she told me not to use the plate I was given because it might not be clean.

I gave up on trying to figure out what she had ordered after we determined that dish number two of 6 was cartilage in English.

It looked like bait, but was delicious.

I can say that the food you show in the picture looks a bit on the tourist side of the food spectrum. Next time you are there, have some skewered chicken kidney. it's quite delicious!

If you search Google for "雞樅" (those two characters in traditional Chinese because I can't type simplified), the second link from the bottom has the following title: "雞樅 - Wikipedia"

The title of the result just above that actually says "雞樅的英文名是什麼?" i.e., what is 雞樅 in English? It turns out, if you click on that link, it goes to some Chinese person's blog post written earlier this month in reaction to this very image.

The restaurant where you found it is a 云南 (Yunnan) style place, a region famous for their mushroom and fungus varieties. I went to the same place, and noticed the same items. The character 枞 alone is pretty obscure, but refers to a fir tree so 鸡枞 could be literally translated as "chicken fir". The common edible fungus at restaurants is 木耳 or literally "wood ear" or "tree ear"
