Tim O'Reilly gave a very well worded and measured response to the fury of furor regarding the SMing of Web 2.0. In it he spells out, clearly, what happened from his perspective. That's nice.
He also clearly notes his disappointment that people got so worked up about this.
As I noted the other day, people wouldn't have been so worked up if it they weren't so shocked. They wouldn't have been shocked if they didn't like O'Reilly in the first place.
Having said that, I could feel Tim's numbness in his reply. He retreated into a "here's the facts" mode and didn't seem to fully get that the level of anguish was caused by a feeling of betrayal. That level of betrayal needed a bit of respect and finesse I didn't see in Tim's reply.
To extend my lover analogy from yesterday, he didn't give us a "Aww sweetheart, I'm sorry about that, look let's make it better." And that tends to go a long way.
