The Pew Center released a report on Social Networking and Teens which basically shows that it's totally a teen thing. On line networking appears to transcend racial, gender and income.
The report goes into detail about how they are using the sites (make new friends, form tighter networks, etc). But, overall, the differences between demographics are fairly minor.
What I get most from this is that kids like to communicate, want to communicate and will find ways to do so.
